ALL YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED RIGHT HERE!

What is the difference between the kits and how do I choose the right kit for me?

Home kits

The kits labelled as “home kits” are slightly lower-priced but require to be heated slowly on the stove.  Note that this method might take a bit more effort and patience.

Professional kits

The kits labelled as “professional kits” are what professional wax therapists use in salons. These kits are slightly more expensive but definitely easier to use and less time consuming.

Strip wax home kit

Best suitable for legs, stomach, chest, arms and back (large areas)

The strip wax can be decanted into the steel cup. It is sticky, be careful.

Strip wax professional kit

Best suitable for legs, stomach, chest, arms and back (large areas)

Hot wax home kit

Best suitable bikini, face, underarms (smaller areas)

After the wax block is broken you will place the smaller pieces into a steel cup and heat on low heat on the stove until it reaches a pasty consistency. It is important to test the heat on the inside of your wrist. It has to be a comfortable heat.

Hot wax professional kit

Best suitable for bikini, face, underarms (smaller areas)

Combo kits

Both the combo kits contain both strip wax and hot wax, therefore suitable for all areas.

Strip and hot wax combo home kit –  legs, stomach, chest, arms, back, bikini, face, underarms.

Strip and hot wax combo professional kit –  legs, stomach, chest, arms, back, bikini, face, underarms.

How do I get the hot wax into the wax heater?

Step 1: Put the container in a plastic bag (a shopping bag will do) and make a secure knot.

Step 2: Drop the bag on a hard floor eg. cement. (Do not drop it onto a tile floor, it can crack the tiles). Drop the wax a few times until it has broken into smaller pieces. Alternatively, you can use a hammer but keep the block inside the plastic bag to avoid bits flying off and causing an injury.

How long does the wax take to heat up?

On the stove it takes around 30 minutes on a low heat.  Always check the temperature on the inside of your wrist to avoid burning yourself. Remove the wax from your wrist with one of the strips.

In the wax pot or roller heater it takes about 45 to 60 minutes.  The hot wax pot can be set on the highest setting.  When the desired temperature for yourself is ready, you may lower the heat.  You will need to play around with the heat and see what works for you as all our skins have different sensitivity levels.

Can I wax if I have eczema?

It is not advisable to wax on stressed skin, such as eczema as this could increase the irritation and sensitivity.

Can I wax if I am on Roaccutane or Accutane?

No. These medications thin the skin therefore there is the risk of pulling the skin off.  A waiting period (after meds have stopped) would be at least 6 months.

How long does the redness take to calm down?

This largely depends on the area and the individual’s skin sensitivity. The bikini and chest regions are common areas that may take up to 24 hours to settle, though this duration could be as brief as 10 minutes for some. For those waxing for the first time, the skin might require a longer period to adjust, but with regular waxing, the skin tends to adapt. If your skin is particularly sensitive, it might react strongly to the stimulation (the action of pulling the hair root from the follicle). This reaction is quite normal, but it is crucial to avoid any friction for 48 hours, for example, abstaining from jogging where clothing or sweat could aggravate the skin, leading to small red or white spots or pimples.

A cream, such as Savlon cream or Dermoban, can be purchased from any pharmacy and applied two to three times daily to alleviate the skin. It is imperative not to touch the waxed area for around 24 hours since our hands harbour various bacteria, which can also result in small white pimples.

Can I heat the wax in the microwave?

Please refrain from doing this as the microwave can destroy some of the beneficial properties needed for effective waxing results.

How often can I wax?

You can wax most areas every 4 weeks. Eventually, you might find that after 4 weeks, there isn’t enough hair to warrant waxing, at which point you can extend the interval to every 5 weeks and so on. However, underarms may require waxing every 2 weeks.

Will my hair become darker or thicker after waxing?

No, waxing typically results in hair that is thinner, softer, and possibly lighter. The exception to this is if there are hormonal imbalances, such as irritation of the adrenal glands, which can cause darker hairs.

What causes ingrown hairs?

Ingrown hairs can be caused by friction from sweating or wearing tight clothing and not exfoliating once or twice a week.

Can I spray tan before waxing?

It’s advisable to spray tan 24-48 hours after waxing. If you spray tan before waxing, the process will remove it.

Will my hair become darker or thicker after waxing?

No, waxing typically results in hair that is thinner, softer, and possibly lighter. The exception to this is if there are hormonal imbalances, such as irritation of the adrenal glands, which can cause darker hairs.

Can I go into the sun directly after waxing?

You may go into the sun after waxing if you have applied sunscreen and waited 20 minutes. Otherwise, it’s best to avoid it as the sun can contribute to hyperpigmentation since some of the dead skin cells will also have been removed by waxing.

Can I exercise after waxing?

It’s best to wait 24-48 hours before exercising to avoid sweating, which can cause a burning sensation or result in red dots and small white pimples.

Can I apply underarm roll-on or spray after waxing that area?

For safety, it’s recommended to apply baby powder (or nothing) for 12-24 hours post-waxing. Applying products containing alcohol, such as some underarm roll-ons or sprays, might cause a burning sensation.

What does it mean if I get a rash and what should I do?

A rash indicates that your skin is either highly sensitive and has reacted strongly to the stimulation of waxing, or you may be allergic or sensitive to one of the ingredients in the wax. In such cases, you can purchase Savlon cream or Dermoban from any pharmacy and apply it two to three times a day to soothe the skin. It’s crucial not to touch the waxed area for 24 hours as our hands carry bacteria that can cause small white pimples.

Why we ONLY use Harley Wax products

Not all waxes are made equal.

This website is the only website where consumers, such as you, have access to order professional grade waxing products, and the difference will show in the results!

Harley Wax, like other professional-grade waxing products, often claims superiority over off-the-shelf consumer products due to several factors that emphasise product formulation, application, and results. While specific scientific studies directly comparing brands like Harley Wax to all consumer products may not be widely published, the perceived benefits of professional-grade waxes can generally be attributed to the following factors, grounded in principles of cosmetic science and dermatology:

1. Quality of Ingredients

Professional waxes, including Harley Wax, often use high-quality, natural ingredients that are gentler on the skin. For instance, they may incorporate natural resins, beeswax, and essential oils which offer a more soothing waxing experience and can reduce post-waxing irritation and redness. Natural ingredients are known for their skin-nourishing properties, which can enhance the overall health of the skin.

2. Low Melting Point

Many professional waxes are designed to melt at a lower temperature compared to consumer waxes. This low melting point can make the waxing process more comfortable for the client, reducing the risk of burns. Moreover, waxes that operate at a lower temperature may adhere better to the hair and not the skin, minimising pain and skin damage during removal.

3. Superior Adhesion to Hair, Not Skin

Professional-grade waxes are engineered for efficient hair removal, adhering to the hair rather than the skin. This selective adhesion ensures that the wax can remove hair more effectively, even shorter or finer hairs, with less pain and skin trauma. The science behind this involves the careful selection of ingredients that target the keratin in hair without compromising the integrity of the skin.

4. Reduced Risk of Allergic Reactions

Professional products like Harley Wax may contain fewer irritants or allergens compared to some off-the-shelf products. The careful formulation aims to minimise the risk of allergic reactions, making these products suitable for sensitive skin types. Hypoallergenic properties are often achieved through rigorous product testing and selection of non-irritating components.

5. Longer-lasting Results

The efficiency in hair removal with professional-grade waxes often translates to longer-lasting results. By effectively removing hair from the root, these waxes can extend the duration between waxing sessions. The scientific principle here is the complete removal of the hair follicle from the root, which takes longer to regenerate compared to hair that is broken off at or near the surface of the skin.
